Prometheus Chained by Mercury

Drama and dynamism are the ingredients of this scene. At the left, a swirling Mercury chains the nude Prometheus to the rocks because the latter has stolen fire – the burning torch – from the gods. As punishment, every day an eagle was sent to eat his liver, which grew back overnight. As the late Baroque court sculptor to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Foggini specialized in these types of elaborate mythological subjects.
