Sun-dial compass with Madonna Hodegetria

Diptych of two bone plates that can be folded open. The exterior is decorated with a blackened relief of the Madonna Hodegetria ('She who shows the way'). The interior features on one side an engraved wind rose of three concentric circles with arrows indicating wind directions and Roman numerals for hours, surrounding a sunken circular field where the compass needle was located. In the four corners of this bone plate are quarter-rounds with sun rays and a small rosette. The other side contains a rosette of two concentric circles with hour numbers and hour lines for a sundial, the 'hand' of which was formed by the (now missing) cord between the two plates. The engraved images on both plates are pigmented in green and red. An iron catch hook is located on the upper side of the pocket compass.
