Segment of the Arcature of the Tomb of Philip the Bold

A pointed arch and an openwork (fretwork) upper section, resting on two columns and a slender central column. The whole was mounted in the 19th century on a profiled marble base and against a marble backplate; these have recently been removed but are preserved. This object is a segment of the arcade under the tomb of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, in Dijon, a work by Claus Sluter and his team. The original arcade runs around the tomb as the architectural frame for the mourners ('pleurants'), who symbolically escort the deceased duke to his final resting place.
