About this work
Reichsadlerhumpen, cylindrical glasses with a double-headed eagle as the emblem of the Holy Roman Empire, were popular from the 16th to the late 18th century. Initially, the vessels featured a crucified Christ on the bird's chest, which emphasized the empire's Christian foundation. From the 17th century onwards, Jesus was replaced by the imperial orb.
