Ciborium

The round chalice has a cast, vaulted foot on which in high relief an ox, an eagle, an angel and a lion, the symbols of the four Evangelists. These are alternated with scenes from the life of Christ executed in low relief on a punched ground: the Nativity, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension. The foot has a flat lower edge surrounded by curling, flame-like ornaments. These ornaments are repeated in a stronger execution and mirrored, underneath along the foot. The tapering upper part of the foot is decorated all around with acanthus leaves. The stem consists of an inverted pear-shaped node between two narrow, jointed nodes. These parts are decorated with grapevines and sheaves of corn, the lower part of the large node with acanthus leaves, all on a rough ground. The low, smooth cup is set in a counter-cup on which between grapevines four angels are chased, of whom three carry the instruments of the Passion and the fourth the veil of Saint Veronica.
