Wedding tankard

It was customary at weddings to mete out warnings against licentiousness. The swine was a symbol of lust (and by extension adultery), and the one surmounting the lid of this wedding cup is kept under control with a chain. The theme is elaborated on the body of the cup in two biblical scenes from the Parable of the Prodigal Son: he squandered all his money in a brothel and subsequently became a swineherd.
