About this work

Signals have long played a part in military and religious life. Trumpet and horn signals were already used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, many cities maintained trumpet ensembles for important religious and civic ceremonies. These trumpets were often festooned with banners, cords, and tassels, like the one on view here.
