About this work

Garters were tied tightly around the thigh to hold up long, knitted stockings. They were often provided with amorous proverbs or dedications. Embroidered on this garter is: 'Il ne reviendra pas souvent' (He will not return often). This could refer to the custom in which a lover 'conquers' the garter and keeps it as a memento.
