About this work

Portrait of Prince Maurice of Nassau (1567-1625), Prince of Orange, Stadtholder. Carved shell (cameo of Cypraea tigris), white on purple ground. Inscription on cameo (border): MAVRITIVS PR AVR CO NASS CAT MARC VER ET VLIS (Maurice, Prince of Orange, Count of Nassau and Katzenelnbogen, Marquis of Veere and Vlissingen). Inscription on cameo (Maurice's shoulder): AET 34. In a worked gold frame with enameled flowers and four eyelets, intended to be worn as a medallion.
