Sketch of the recumbent figure of Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp: model for a funeral monument

He lies in full armour with legs stretched to the right on the flag, which leaves part of the rudder uncovered under his knees, as well as part of the two cannon barrels, on which he rests with his left shoulder and head; his face is turned slightly towards the viewer. Between the fingers of the left hand he holds the ribbon with the medal of Frederik Hendrik, the right hand grasps the command staff. Tromp wears a harness and sabatons (armoured shoes) with round toes and a flat collar, which is closed with a cord with acorns; a sash is tied around the right arm. On the pedestal the text: 'Thus rests that great Tromp who brought the whole Spanish Power/ In ten years to rest in the Dunes to the ground/ And Scheveningen saw last the British fleet crushed/ Had fate but delayed his death by one day'.
