About this work

The cast and chased plate is shaped like a lion's head with an open mouth containing a square hole. Surrounding it is a motto band divided into four sections with the name and inscription .STERCK.ALSDEN.LEEV. / VOORSICTICH.VOORT. / .TSLANGHEN.VIER. / .JEAN.GAVTIER. Surrounding this is a scrollwork ornament that ends at the bottom in an inverted French lily. Various decorations have been punched on the frame, including four-leaf roses. Two holes are provided at the top and bottom.
