Hand screen of cardboard covered with paper, on the front of which centrally an oval cut-out engraving with a scene from the French comedy 'Lucile' by Jean François Marmontel (1723-1799), surrounded by a border painted in watercolour, on a stick of lime wood. On the back the corresponding printed text. The play 'Lucile' was translated into Dutch in 1781 and published in Amsterdam. The story takes place in France 'in the house of Timantes, on his estate'. On BK-NM-5518 we see Lucile at her morning toilet, helped by her maid Julia, while her beloved Dorval enters. Lucile is going to marry this nobleman. Her father, Timantes, is not entirely satisfied with his new son-in-law. The whole company has lunch together with Dorval's father, the old Dorval 'also in his japon' (see BK-NM-5519). Then arrives Blasius, Lucile's 'foster father' whose wife died recently. Dorval suspects Blasius of having spoken ill of him and confronts him with this. He then tells his story to Dorval and Timantes.
