About this work

The Saxon court sculptor Paul Heermann spent a considerable period working in Italy. His sojourn there doubtless accounts for the realization of this ivory. The composition is a copy of a lost original design by Michelangelo, the popularity of which is evident from the number of small bronze versions of the subject.
