About this work

James stands frontally with the head slightly to the right. He holds with both hands an open book with the cover against him. At the top and bottom of the book the spine is represented in (distorted) perspective. The apostle wears beard and mustache, his parted hair falsely on both sides on the shoulders; behind the head a hollow nimbus, which partially cuts through the profile edge. He wears a tunic gathered at the waist with beaded neckline; from the right shoulder hangs the mantle to over the right knee; the bare feet stand on uneven ground. At the top the figure is overhung by a profile edge with the engraved text (S.IA)COBUS. On the book: AMIC(US) S(AEC(U)LI HVIUS INIMICUS DEI CO(N)STITVIT(UR).
