About this work
Shawls from Kashmir can be recognized by a specific ornament, the boteh. From the 17th century, this motif developed from a blooming carnation into a stylized teardrop at the beginning of the 19th century. Given that around this time imitations of the shawls from Kashmir were being made in both France and Great Britain, their place of origin can sometimes be difficult to determine.
