About this work

A forged and chased iron casket. The top and sides are decorated with gilded grotesques and scrolling foliage. The lid is slightly vaulted, with a raised band running across the middle, which at the front transitions via a double-hinged strap into a loose strap covering the keyhole. On either side of the band, a portrait in a medallion. On the two long sides, four square eyes for threading a strap.
