About this work
The deposition of Emperor Pedro II on November 15, 1889, and the proclamation of the republic led to celebrations in Brazil – here depicted as dancing around a mast with a liberty cap – but caused sorrowful faces among the coffee merchants on the exchange. Subject heading within the Atlas Amsterdam: Trade and Navigation: Hulpbeurs on the Dam and Beurs (Dam).
