About this work

Silver commemorative medal. Obverse: the Amsterdam City Maiden with helmet, armed with spear and shield and with the Dutch lion within the well-closed Dutch garden, the enemy army and fleet in view. Legend: VIGILANDE (For the watch). Reverse: The Amsterdam citizenry/ Tames the enemy's fury,/ And stands bravely day and night/ For freedom on the watch,/ Therefore to her throne with right/ This medal is assigned. Below a laurel wreath with two victory branches. According to the border inscription issued to the shooters under captain Jan Six in the year 1673.
