On the suppression of the preachers' riot in Amsterdam following the ordinance on burial

Tin medal. Issued by the magistrates to the citizen captains and volunteer horsemen for services rendered during the riot of 1696. Obverse: Dam Square with the civic guard in the foreground driving away the people. Legend: URBI QUASSATAE IUSTITIA REDUX (justice returning to the troubled city). Exergue: M. SMELTZING/ FECIT. Reverse: Roman censor seated on a dais with inscription: VIRTUTIS/ FIDEIQUE/ ERGO D.(at) D.(icat) D.(edicatque) and presenting the medal to a Roman foot soldier. In the distance two soldiers, one on horseback. In the foreground the coat of arms of Amsterdam and below it the obverse and reverse of the medal from 1696 with the date A° 1697 between them. Legend: S.(enatus) C.(ivium) PRAEF.(ectis) CIV.(ibus) EQU.(itibusque) PRAEMIA.
