About this work

Reproduction of a drawing of the Aapje, an Amsterdam hired carriage from 1881. The name Aapje likely originated in 1880 when the Amsterdamsche Rijtuig Maatschappij was established and the coachmen received a striking uniform: a brown riding skirt, a red vest, a black-lacquered tall hat, and a black raincoat. Subject headings within the Atlas Zeden en Gewoonten: Trade, industry and traffic, Land and water transport, Land transport, Carriages and Stationary Carriages.
