About this work

French nobleman in a short cloak held under one arm, over an embroidered doublet. Wide collar trimmed with lace, breeches, and boots with wide turn-ups. Hat with plumes on hair that hangs down on one side in a long lock (cadenette). In his right hand, he holds an open medallion containing a portrait of a woman and a heart pierced by an arrow: a reference to his state of being in love. The tombstone next to him refers to his status as a widower. In the background, a castle with a moat.
