About this work
A watchman with a sword asks a young man (Godefroy), who is visiting his beloved (Sybille) secretly at night, for money. The young man puts his hand in his trouser pocket. The woman holds a candle. On the pavement stand a glass and a bottle. To the right in the background a second watchman. Scene from the farce 'Captain Ulrich or the Deceived Avarice' by Johan van Paffenrode from 1661. From a series of ten reduced later copies, probably from an almanac.
