About this work

A dining room with figures around a table at which a standing gentleman serves a plate to his guests. To the right a richly dressed woman and child. Opposite them three soberly dressed gentlemen. To the right in the background a child eating from a pan. In the foreground a child at the table giving a piece of meat to a dog. To the left a servant with glasses. Scene from the farce The Stepmother by Thomas Asselyn from 1684, in which the character Jochem visits the poor family of his second wife. From a series of ten reduced later copies, probably from an almanac.
