About this work
The Mennonites Tjerk Hendrikxe and Stoffel Thysen, both wearing tall hats, ask for the hand of Saartje Jansz on behalf of their friend Reinier Adriaansz. Father Jan Jasperzen and his wife Diewertje sit and stand by the window. At the door, Saartje Jansz listens, though she is in love with the dissolute Jan Claasz. At the bottom of the margin, a four-line verse in Dutch and French. Scene from the first act of the play 'Jan Claasz or the Pretended Maid' by Thomas Asselyn.
