Journey of William III to England, 1688

William III departs on November 11, 1688, from Hellevoetsluis for England to assume the kingship. <BR />In England, since 1685, James II, the father of Mary, who was married to stadtholder William III, had reigned. He alarmed the Protestants by taking various pro-Catholic measures. They then asked William III and Mary (who was the heir to the throne) to take over the government in England. With the permission and support of the States-General, William III departed on November 11. On November 15 he landed at Torbay: the Glorious Revolution was a fact. With this, William III assumed rule over two countries that had just previously stood directly opposite each other in three naval wars. The allegorical figures around the coat of arms allude to the restoration of religion, laws, and liberties in England, which had been violated by the absolute ruler James II.
