About this work
Portrait of a young bride and groom, identified in the inscription as 'Karboegers' (Carboegers), standing before a cloth with painted fantasy decoration. 'Karboegers' was a colonial term for persons of mixed descent, in this case ¼ white and ¾ black. Taken in the garden of the photographer in Paramaribo. Part of the photo album of the Doijer family, Souvenir de Voyage (part 3), in and around the plantation Ma Retraite in Suriname in the years 1906-1913.
