About this work

A group of contract laborers from British India in the so-called 'coolie depot', the central collection point for immigrants in Paramaribo. Between the Hindustani men and women stands a European overseer or policeman. Part of the photo album Souvenir de Voyage (part 4), about the life of the Dooyer family in and around the Ma Retraite plantation in Suriname in the years 1906–1913.
