An elephant and a mahout

In the middle of the sheet, an elephant without tusks (aliya) is drawn, seen from the side. On the left is the head with a hanging trunk and ears held flat against the back. It is a Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus). On top of the shoulders sits – without a saddle – an elephant driver (mahout or nayaka) with wide legs, holding a henduwa, a stick with a metal hook not visible here, in his right hand. The man is dressed only in a loincloth and wears a cap on his head. To the right of the drawing, text was added later (after 1671) in pencil: oolifant. Sheet 43 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
