About this work

Bronze medal. Obverse: head of a classicist woman facing left, with hair raised and ending in an elephant's head, wearing a small crown on her head; below, an (antique) rudder with fish and VOC emblem, around which is draped a laurel branch; with inscription, signed. Reverse: inscription within a laurel wreath. Commissioned by the VOC as a tribute to French Vice-Admiral De Suffren for services rendered during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784), particularly at the Cape of Good Hope and off the coasts of Ceylon (Trincomali) and India.
