About this work

On Wednesday 16 October 1940 a serious bus accident occurred in Groningen at the railway crossing at Ranum between Winsum and Baflo. Thirteen work relief workers died on their way to the land reclamation works at De Slikken. Nine of the thirteen victims were buried together on Saturday 19 October 1940 at the Groninger Zuiderbegraafplaats under great interest. A representative of the Reich Commissar for Groningen, Dr. C. Conring, spoke on behalf of the German authorities. While a wreath was laid by officers of the German army. Among those present were also the mayor of Groningen, Mr. P.W.J.H. Cort van der Linden, and the Commissioner of the Province of Groningen, Mr. J. Linthorst Homan.
