About this work

Portrait of a member of the SD. This is the Dutchman Jan Meekhof (see inscription on verso). Member of the SD, (German) Sicherheitsdienst. Badges not visible, only shoulder covering. As an SD man he was involved in various actions against the resistance. For example, he belonged to the firing squad that shot 20 Frisians dead on 26 January 1945 in Dokkum as a reprisal. On 29 January 1945 he shot the resistance man Johannes Kolf dead who resisted his arrest. Kolf was involved on 8 December 1944 in the raid on the penal prison in Leeuwarden. Johannes "Jodocus" Kolf (1916) worked from 1937 to 1942 at the police in Utrecht. He resigned because he could not reconcile himself with the work of the police under the German occupation. Afterwards he was active in the resistance. He died at the age of 29.
