About this work
From beneath her elegant angisa (folded headscarf), this woman looks straight into the camera. Her wide-fitting koto gives her a distinguished appearance. This characterful portrait was taken by Surinamese photographer Augusta Curiel. From 1904 she ran a photography business from home, together with her sister Anna. The pioneering entrepreneurs soon became the country's most sought-after photographers. Their company was the first to obtain the title of purveyor to the Dutch royal household in Suriname.
