Camp of the Arawaks or Caribs

At this camp of the Arawaks or Caribs, the huts are very simple and serve mainly as shelter against sun and rain. The roof of leaves reaches the ground. The floor is the white sandy soil of the savanna. Hammocks hang in the huts. There is a cooking area next to one of the huts. It is unclear whether Huygens has drawn members of the Arawak or Carib tribes here. Both belong to the population groups living along the lower reaches of the rivers, in the coastal region of Suriname. Because these population groups are originally nomads, their villages are also called camp or kampement.
