About this work

Seven soldiers pose in front of one of the houses of Fort Sommelsdijck. In front of the house stands a woman with two children. With the completion of Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Fort Sommelsdijck on the Upper Cottica was abandoned. The fort continued to serve as a military post with a field hospital and was used in the struggle against the Maroons.
