About this work

Andries Beeckman (1628-1664). Andries Beeckman recorded the people he saw on his travels to South Africa and Southeast Asia. As far as we know he drew them from life. Only he probably did not see the Khoikhoi woman with an infant in this way, as he copied her from a drawing in an English travel journal. Beeckman's drawings found favour with European collectors and he also used them as preliminary studies for his paintings.
