About this work

A Xhosa man, designated as a 'captain' or leader. Drawing made during the second journey of Hendrik Swellengrebel to the northeast of the Cape Colony, 10 September – 26 December 1776. According to the travel journal, the party arrived at a kraal on 27 October and were visited over the following days by many members of the local population, 27–28 October 1776.
