About this work

Box of ivory with a representation made of human hair, pieces of mother-of-pearl, bone or ivory, and small beads under a glass plate on the lid, on a brown background. Mourning object made following the death in 1811 of mother Catharina Wilhelmina van Mierop on September 21 and her daughter Johanna Geertruida Swellengrebel on October 2. In 1811, there was both a scarlet fever and a measles epidemic in the Netherlands.
