Embroidered Silk Cloth or Coverlet of the Van Lennep Family

Embroidered cloth or tablecloth by Elisabeth Clara Morier. Scattered over the white or cream-colored silk base are flowers, fruits, and insects in various pastel shades. In the center, the monogram of Elisabeth Clara Morier (ECM) in a double wreath. The flowers and fruits embroidered along the four sides of the cloth are all unique. Butterflies and bees are also embroidered in the four corners. The cloth consists of three strips of silk fabric and is lined with a cotton fabric. The embroidered cloth was made by Anna Maria Van Lennep-Leidstar for the marriage of her daughter Elisabeth Clara Morier to Isaac Morier, the British consul in Istanbul. According to an old label attached to the back, Anna Maria worked on the cloth for ten years and it was presented to her daughter on her wedding day in February 1778 in Smyrna (Izmir).
