About this work

Fragment of the bronze ship's bell of the VOC ship Hollandia, which sank in 1743 off the Scilly Isles. The fragment, a shard of the bronze ship's bell with a curved shape, shows three decorative bands on the outside: the upper one with animal motifs (unicorns), the middle one is a text band with the letters 'GLOR' (the R partially), probably part of the text 'soli deo gloria', quite common on ship's bells. The lower band shows hanging acanthus leaves. The bell shard has green corrosion and sporadically also red (iron?) corrosion, but the text and ornaments remain fairly sharp. The corrosion is mainly on the inside and sides.
