About this work
Round ivory box with a lid painted on both sides. Exterior: nude man holding a trident in his left hand and pointing forward with his right hand (Neptune), standing on a chariot facing right with the coat of arms of Amsterdam at the rear, drawn by two horses on the sea, with two blowing faces on the left and right; text along the upper edge. Interior: upper part with text (see inscription). Below, a depiction: rising or setting sun with a small ship in the lower left. The depiction of Neptune calming the sea is taken from a medal struck by the city of Amsterdam in 1696.
