Japanese Box

Black lacquered wooden box with lid, featuring a portrait of a man (G.A.G.P. van der Capellen, Minister of Colonies 1814, Governor-General 1816-1826), bust facing left in uniform. On the underside is a coat of arms, a cross with four equal arms, on the left arm a church tower (?); held by a beast (half lion, half eagle), from which hang two orders of knighthood including a motto on a ribbon ('Pietate et Fortitudine'); above the shield a small crown. The side of the box has a continuous gold stripe on both parts. Marked; below: coat of arms, etc.
