About this work

Dutch East India Company (VOC) merchants in Asia often kept and carried important documents in decorative cases. This case was made at Masulipatnam, an area of South India famous for its ivory inlay decoration. The emblem on the lid is the Falck family crest. Several members of the Falck family served in senior positions with the VOC.
