About this work
Enslaved people were considered the property of the slave owner. This Curaçao legcuff was used to punish or prevent them from fleeing. One of the enslaved people on Curaçao was Tula. Inspired by the French Revolution, he stated, 'French slaves gained their freedom, Holland was occupied by the French, then we too must be free here.' Tula's call led to the largest slave revolt in the Netherlands Antilles.
