About this work

Oval portrait in black ink on white ivory of Hugo de Groot, half-length figure slightly turned to the right, wearing a black shirt and a large white collar. In a black-painted profiled oval wooden frame with a black-painted cardboard passe-partout in a copper ring; on the outer edge of the frame, a black-painted copper hollow pearl border. The back of the frame is covered with blue paper, with the signature at the bottom right and a copper turn-button at the top center. The ivory plaque is secured with red-copper clips.
