About this work

Half-model of a 68-gun ship of the line, by Pieter Glavimans Jz, c. 1797-1798. Scale c. 1/50. Under the Batavian Republic a major naval shipbuilding programme was undertaken. The dramatic losses suffered by the fleet in encounters with the British made this essential: the Dutch navy had been outclassed by the larger, modernised British ships. Glavimans Jz. (1768-1850), nephew of the navy's constructor general, Pieter Glavimans, was a shipwright at the Rotterdam shipyard. He built three ships of this type.
