About this work
In the 17th century, an impeccably clean shirt stood for ‘cleanliness’ (hygiene) and was a status symbol, as clean linens required clear water and an extensive wardrobe. This shirt is decorated with wide flounces of bobbin lace, which only the wealthiest could have afforded. The presumed wearer, Willem Frederik, became Prince of Orange in 1645.
