15th-century German shield, painted with a pelican with her young

Elongated fifteenth-century German shield, probably a foot soldier's shield, with concave sides. Running from top to bottom in the center is a raised section 13 cm wide. Completely covered with dark red leather, the front painted with the representation of a black pelican, pricking its breast with its beak above a nest with four young feeding on the falling drops of blood. In a four-lobed frame, surrounded by plant, flower and abstract motifs. Three holes in the shield, through which straps of the handle come, held by thick pieces of leather. The handle on the reverse consists of a vertical piece of wood, pierced at the top with a horizontal stick, the whole wrapped in a leather strap, locally braided. Two nails hold a second leather strap, which is broken off on one side.
