About this work
Medal, after a design by M. Holtzhey, silver, struck in 1743 to mark Governor-General G.W. van Imhoff's visit to the Cape of Good Hope in 1742. Van Imhoff (1705-1750) was travelling to Batavia, the VOC's administrative centre in Asia. There he supervised a review of the bureaucracy in the Company's Asian section. The reformer - 'Herstelder': his nickname and also his ship's name - received a lavish welcome at the Cape, including a banquet. Later, the guests were each given a medal.
