About this work

Sheet with three rows of figures from the story of the Spanish gypsy Preciosa (Cervantes' 'La Gitanilla'), with a narrow row of four animals at the bottom. Top left a Rom ('Zigeuner'), top right 'Don Franzischo', bottom left a Roma girl ('Zigeuner mädchen') and bottom right a Roma chief ('Zigeuner haputman'). The Spanish gypsy girl Preciosa and the other figures are taken from the story 'La Gitanella' by Miguel de Cervantes from 1613, known in the Netherlands as 'Het Spaans Heidinnetje'. Heiden and heidin were contemporary terms for the Roma people.
