View of the Temple of Solomon (Qubbat al Sakhrah and Al Aqsa Mosque), Jerusalem

King Solomon built the first Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, completed in the 10th century BC and known as the Temple of Solomon. The building was a successor to the Tabernacle, a tent that served as a temple during the journey of the people of Israel from Egypt to Canaan; this first temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC. The second temple, which existed between 516 and 70 BC, what remained of it was part of the Western Wall (Wailing Wall; Hebrew: ha kotel ha-ma'aravi).
